Gerald and Caity Endt of Great Barrier Island

Gerald and Caity Endt run a small organic market garden called Okiwi Passion on beautiful Great Barrier Island, in the small Northern settlement of Okiwi. They have been operating for 5 1/2 years, growing a wide range of vegetables, strawberries, bananas, cherimoya, and organic veggie, herb and flower seedlings via self-certified organic methods. “We are very fortunate to have incredibly fertile alluvial soil with excellent structure, and a very warm microclimate assisted by bamboo shelterbelts. We see the soil as a treasure to be guarded and minimise cultivation, using compost and a lot of bamboo mulch to keep weeds down and feed the soil over time, as well as certified organic fertilisers. OOOOBY helps support our efforts by offering a market for our summer surplus.“
