Cultivate Christchurch (Ltd) is a social enterprise that is building a network of productive urban farms that support young people and families to live well. We operate a small site in the central city that has served as an excellent learning centre for our civic agricultural mission. Since our genesis in 2015, our network has expanded to include a larger site in Halswell and two further locations are currently under negotiation.
Part of Cultivate's initial success has been the level of participation from our community, whom we love being involved with and hosting with a good feed for lunch. What began as a weekly potluck has morphed into a daily offering of food and beverages to those who join us, irrespective of their level of involvement - we think of it as our ‘wharekai’ or food hall; a place where all are welcome to gather and enjoy nature's most nourishing gifts.
Cultivate is embarking on its own journey towards organic and biodynamic farming and gardening, and so we also aim to serve up foods of a similar high standard. We prepare seasonal foods and challenge ourselves to use what we over-produce or can't sell alongside the foraging and home production of our crew.
The Peterborough Urban Farm site (156 Peterborough Street, Christchurch) is open to the public on Thursdays from 12.30 - 4pm and Sundays from 11.00am - 3.00pm. Visits and further information can be requested via our contacts provided here. We welcome all and love meeting people.
