Broadview Produce is the Thain family business in Southbridge. Lindsay, Karen, sons Michael, William and daughter-in-law Gemma all work together on the 6.3ha property to grow and bring to market a range of organically grown fresh vegetables.
Lindsay was raised on a farm, has a background of 40 years as an agricultural contractor and along with Karen & amp; their four kids, farmed a cropping farm at Lakeside for 25 years. Through the years, Lindsay became concerned about the conventional method of growing crops. He observed the negative affect of cultivation on the soil structure and became an early convert to direct drilling and minimal tillage. Lindsay also noticed real decline in the quality of the crops grown by many of his contracting clients while more and more chemicals were prescribed to promote a better yield. He rarely used chemicals on his own crops yet still achieved excellent results. Both Lindsay & amp; Karen often day dreamed of becoming organic farmers however the farm they had owned was unsuitable for organic conversion. When in 2017 a local property suitable for conversion came on the market they just had to buy it. The property had not been cropped or had any chemical inputs on it for over 10yrs and soil tests supported an organic operation.
The Broadview property is currently going through the organic conversion process which can take up to 3 years to complete.
“We grow all our crops chemical, herbicide and insecticide free, use only natural organic certified inputs and believe we are growing the most nutritious food we possibly can. We look after our soil and the microbial populations it contains, putting back more than we take. Our main crop is fresh green beans, picked daily from January to April. We also grow sweetcorn, potatoes, garlic, yams and winter broccoli."
“Our aim is to grow nutritious food by farming organically and sustainably, the way our grandparents farmed. However we are using mechanical harvesters to pick the crops daily, allowing us to grade and pack the veges quickly and send them to the shops within hours of the pick. We strive to provide chemical free, fresh, nutritious food to our customers.”
